Per Gram vs 10 Gram vs Tola Gold Price

Gold rates in India are quoted in three common units: per gram, per 10 gram, and per tola. Per gram is the smallest and the easiest to use for small pieces. Per 10 gram is the standard unit in national rate tables and news reports. Per tola is the traditional unit, still common in north India and in family buying, equal to about 11.66 grams.

They are not three different prices. They are the same price expressed three ways. If 22K gold is 11,375 rupees per gram, it is 1,13,750 rupees per 10 gram and about 1,32,633 rupees per tola. A quote that looks cheap in one unit may be expensive in another, so always convert to the same unit before you compare.

How to convert

To go from per gram to per 10 gram, multiply by 10. To go from per gram to per tola, multiply by 11.66. To go the other way, divide: a per-10-gram rate divided by 10 gives the per-gram rate, and a per-tola rate divided by 11.66 gives the per-gram rate. A phone calculator does all of this in seconds, and the calculator on this site does it for any weight you enter.

Watch out for rounding. A shop that rounds a per-tola rate up by a few hundred rupees is adding a few dozen rupees per gram, which is small on one gram but noticeable on ten tolas. Convert to per gram first, and the rounding becomes visible.

Which unit should you use?

Use per gram for anything you buy by weight in a shop, because the bill itself is calculated per gram. Use per 10 gram when you are reading news or comparing national rates, because that is how they are published. Use per tola only when the shop or your family quotes in tolas, and convert it to per gram on the spot so you can check it against the benchmark.

For Kerala buyers, add a fourth unit: the pavan, which is 8 grams. The same rule applies. Convert the pavan rate to per gram by dividing by 8, and you can compare it with any gram or 10-gram quote in the country.

Comparing quotes fairly

A fair comparison needs three things to match: purity, weight unit and what is included. A 22K per-gram metal rate cannot be compared with a 24K per-tola total bill, because purity, unit and included charges are all different. Fix the purity, convert to per gram, and separate metal cost from making charge and GST. Then the cheapest quote is genuinely the cheapest.

That discipline saves real money on a wedding purchase, where several pieces are bought together. A difference that looks like a rounding error per gram becomes thousands of rupees across a full set. Take the two minutes to convert, and buy on the converted figure, not on the headline unit.

A quick conversion table to remember

Remember three numbers and you can convert anything: 1 gram is the base, 10 grams is ten times that, and 1 tola is 11.66 grams. In Kerala, 1 pavan is 8 grams. With those four, any quote in any Indian unit converts to per gram in one step, and any per-gram rate converts back to the unit your family uses.

Write the conversion on the back of your shopping list when you go to a jeweller. It sounds simple, but at a busy counter, with several pieces on the table, it is easy to accept a unit you did not intend. A written conversion keeps the comparison honest, whatever unit the shop prefers.
